I had an interesting conversation the other day with Jerry Hall, my old roommate who I believe correctly transcribed the message on the woman's forearm. My question was how somebody gets hit by something as loud as a train, surmising that many of the deaths were in fact suicide.
"Not so fast," said Jerry.
My friend was once an incredible surfer.
He was crossing San Elijo in Cardiff to go to the surf spot Pipes with his friend Curtis one day when he was nearly struck by a train.
I asked him how it happened and he said that he almost didn't hear it until it was too late and he jumped out of the way. The reason? He said that the engines are at the back or northern side on the southbound trains. Because of this you don't always hear them.
Jerry said that he wanted to see statistical data on how many of these incidents and casualties happened on the southbound as opposed to the northbound run. That is a very good question.
