I am elated that the citizens of Ohio defeated the State Issue 1 proposition so resoundingly today. By about 14 percentage points. The opposition tried every dirty trick in the book to move the goalposts and confuse the issue but people from all parties that support democracy came together and said, enough is enough and campaigned against the issue, including retired Republican Senator Robert Taft. Ohio has had simple majority rule for the last hundred years and it has worked pretty well for them.
They tried to make it a parental rights issue and conveniently forgot to mention that they are trying to outlaw reproductive choice for women, even in cases of rape or incest and even when the woman's life is in danger.
A national religious organization, Catholics for Catholics, gathered a lineup of anti-abortion influencers and conspiracy theorists from across the U.S. to urge a “yes” vote during a Sunday “rosary rally” in a Cincinnati suburb.
The rally’s advertised speakers included actor Jim Caviezel and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, both of whom have amassed large followings even as they’ve touted baseless conspiracy theories.
I find it funny and ironic that the proponents said they were tying to protect their citizens from out of state special interests when their biggest contributor, Richard Uihlein, is a fat cat Wisconsin resident who bankrolled the January 6 insurrection and shelled out four million bucks to the yes campaign.
November should be interesting but as it stands now, if you count this as a win, pro choice is 7 and 0 post Dobbs in these statewide elections, in case anybody is keeping score at home.
