Hello In there

I have always loved this song; The lyrics make me, in a way hard to articulate, experience the melancholy of the narrator. I had the pleasure of seeing John Prine live in 1971 at the CELLAR DOOR, a club in D.C. where you could listen to musicians like Prine, Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, etc. in an intimate setting, for me, the way this music is meant to be heard.

I believe that I saw Lowell George's last performance there, the night before he died in 1979. He was wearing camo fatigues, was very heavy, sweating and not healthy in the least. Amazing musician, glad I saw Little Feat at their peak.

Actually, it was G.W. University- Lisner Auditorium, and it think it was a Thursday night. I remember the review in WAPO leading with how great the concert was and “too bad Lowell George died.” There were other like venues back then: THE RED FOX in Bethesda…Emmy Lou played there occasionally, THE DUBLINER up on the Hill, THE BIRCHMERE-THE premier venue for bluegrass….

I did a little research. I saw him on June 24th at the Botton Line in NYC a few days before the Lisner show. Small, intimate club, he was sweating profusely. I had seen him several times before, this was not the best of shows.
