In my opinion they were one more big man away from being truly competitive with the champions.
I am proud of them for their whole season and for making a run last night to narrow the game.
The gutty mid major from the forgotten Mountain West Conference made quite a splash on the national stage and showed everybody their tremendous drive, determination and grit.
Connecticut subsidized their athletic department to the tune of about $51 million dollars last year, the Aztecs get about $3 million from the Mountain West.
Coach Brian Dutcher receives a little over a million dollars a year in salary, Connecticut's Danny Hurley makes close to three million. In spite of all the economic disparity, the SDSU team made it to the national championship with their gutsy performance.
This was not the best Aztec team I have seen, the Flynn, Schakel, Mitchell team were better shooters and had more finesse, who knows how that 30-2 team would have fared if Covid had not led to the cancellation of the tournament?
Yet this team had tremendous heart and went farther than anyone could have expected, the national prognosticators calling for them to lose their first game to Charleston and every game thereafter.
I applaud the team and also want to thank Kent and Heidi for letting me share their great tickets this year. What a treat!
I am looking forward to next year. Hope we can find a big man that can operate above the rim like Clingan or Kalkenbrenner. Than we will really be able to get after it.
