I just heard this cut for the very first time. There is a version on the record with Pigpen's vocals too but I like this stripped down affair.
This is the most Bloomfieldesque, the most pure blues I have ever heard Jerry play. Truth be told, the Grateful Dead have massacred some great blues tunes with their rather mayonnaise attempts, this is better.
They once asked Weir about their approach to blues songs and he said something to the effect that they would never deliver them like Butterfield and he is right. Walking Blues, Rooster, Samson and Delilah, none ever have the street grit of the originals, all looked at through a more psychedelic rubric that tends to water down the edges. Muddy's Same Thing gets a slightly better treatment by the band.
This is really good.
