I went out to lunch yesterday and was enjoying my enchilada when the couple walked in. Every time this particular wealthy woman looks at me it looks like her milk has curdled.
Yesterday was no different, I lost my appetite too. Fake greeting, fake smile. The animosity I sense is palpable. Not sure why, maybe my wife and I are not rich enough, we probably smoke pot, we might not even go to church! Over the years, it became readily apparent that there were certain circles in this town where our presence would never be welcome.
The Q assault from two years ago on Leslie that led to criminal charges against my wife was dropped, when the eyewitness finally came forward, the insurance company settled but the residual tremors still surface on occasion. I live in a politically divided town and the ideological and class chasm is wider than ever.
The standup comedians that were in town last month talked a lot about Tom Metzger. I tried to explain afterwards that the nasty folks at the country clubs were far more noxious and toxic as far as I was concerned. At least you know who you are dealing with with the outright KKK crowd. The backstabbing Stepford vampires on the boards are way more nauseating, at least to me. Bunch of fakes.
The beautiful thing? I don't need them, they don't need me.
Will never forget the day the deacon cardiologist set upon me at the Fallbrook ministerial prayer breakfast and told me that my presence there revulsed him. I laughed and then saw he was dead serious. Oh well, got to watch your back.
I ran into a woman from the Republican Woman's Club at the ATM at the bank the other day. She told me that she couldn't wait for the day that the town was rid of its liberals. And then said, "And we know where you work."
And you wonder why I am such a misanthrope.

As much as I love Fallbrook, nothing about this surprises me. I’ve experienced it so many times I can’t recall them all. It’s why I won’t grow old here. But I won’t be leaving for a couple more years, and enjoy my grapefruits and mandarins while I can…
I am unable to hold my tongue when confronted with the liars, hypocrites, right-wing nut jobs...and I don't have to. I always considered myself to be patient, understanding, relatively unbiased, caring...and non-judgmental. But I guess I was wrong about myself in some aspects. Being a person of integrity was and still is important to me. I loved to learn more about myself and others, but now I am disgusted with what I have been learning. Sorry about babbling on and on...but I absolutely LOVE you and Leslie. You both are the BEST!

It's the Right-is-right crowd who are misanthopes. You Robert, are an anthrope through and through who loves other anthropes. Even misguided misanthropic anthropes.
Robert, it’s your meds bottle with the 2022 prescription label… I shouldn’t have to remind you of this!
Your story kind of makes me glad that I don't know a lot of people in the area where I've lived for 18 years. I know my neighbors but that's it.
But if you ever need sheer numbers for a liberal gang rally or defensive perimeter for your stores, just call me and I'll be there.
I moved here for retirement and the art community but have been horrified by the militant right wingers. The attack against your wife was terrifying, and the man who threatened you was no Christian. I’m still trying to hook up to the more liberal people in town with my limited energy for outside pursuits. Your blog is a lifesaver. -Diane O

Amazing, I wouldn't believe that had happened except that I have seen how intense some of the denizens of Fallbrook behind religious issues.
Back in my ---------, we had a curatorial secretary named ----- who would come up with bizarre koans at coffee breaks, some of which got enshrined in our below-stairs culture.
Regarding the Love Canal subset of Smug Respectable Republicans who then infested many of the not-for-profit cultural boards (and all too many still do), one of his often quoted pronouncements came to be known as “David’s Nursery Rhyme:”
Roses are red; violets are blue.
When the whores get whipped, they’ll be first in line!
I am also reminded of a Carlsbad friend’s summation of Inland North County’s biches riches:
They’re a little conservative up there. They won’t even eat the left wing on a chicken.
I'll never forget walking behind Tom Metzger at a garage sale while he talked about his hemorrhoids with his wife. What a great way to remember him!!!

I couldn’t stand it. We have decided to retire in place now that the house is paid off. All the people I have met in a few years have agreed with me politically. Most of them also meet my morals and ethics. They might think I am weird (what member of our family isn’t) but they like me a lot anyway
