My new, or very slightly used, nikkor 400mm 2.8 E FL telephoto lens came today from Tennessee. I popped it on the D7200 and walked down to the Village Square. I snapped a handful of shots, make sure it is operational. Beyond that, beyond belief.
This is a handheld shot, no vibration reduction, didn't even look at the switches. Pop it out of the case and go. Wide open ƒ2.8, iso 100, 1250th at 400mm extension. Heavy, slightly unwieldy, but very doable. Once it gets on a tripod it will be heaven. Hopefully Thursday.
If you don't know this lens, it has the sharpest resolution of any nikkor ever tested at Lenscore, 1427. In fact the only lens it trails in testing is the Zeiss Otus 85mm 1.4 T. And it's freaking big, like nothing you have ever seen.
This fine tool, while admittedly big and expensive, is the holy grail for Nikon users. I am serious about creating nice imagery and wanted to work with the best and see what it was like. So I went for it.
Picture's nothing special but everything working fine and all systems go.

Size matters, BH... girth too!
I think you will be happy in the long run. Fine optics make a difference with images. I find that fine lenses really cut the need to mess around with post processing, making a negative or file that you don't want to mess up by overworking it. My condolences to to your bank account.
PS: I think the new fine Zeiss lenses like the Otus are a new generation and a new massive price tier designed to out resolve very high resolution sensors. You don't have to worry so much about that class until Nikon comes up with some massive increase in sensor resolution. When that happens, prepare to mortgage the house.
