First Plunge

It was an outstanding New Years day, came through like chalk, as they used to say. We hung out at the homestead, ate breakfast and  relaxed and then finally moseyed over towards the beach. In what has become a North County coastal tradition, we made our way to Grandview in Leucadia to walk the labyrinth.

Every year this same man constructs a giant labyrinth and people help him decorate it and then walk the thing, like young Heracles during his seventh labour in Crete. The maze maker got a rather late start this year and the maze was still in a nascent stage when we were there.

Lynne, Richard, Ron, Lena, Quilley and assorted other friends and folks made their way down. As I say, it has become a tradition. The day was beautiful. Leslie and I took a walk and came upon a hardy group who after years of talking about it, finally made their first polar bear plunge into the chilly water. Brrr!

Leslie saw a rainbow in the dry ocean sky, an always auspicious omen. As we left she spotted a pod of dolphins with whales spouting behind them in the distance. A fine augur for a very good year to come.

Afterwards we made several stops, exchanged warm greetings and wishes for the New Year with friends, indulging in the standard food and libations, and finally made our way home.

Hopefully ready for whatever the next year has in store for us.
