The answer to the math question, as sharp minded Kerry in San Francisco was the first to point out, is that the bat cost $1.05 and the ball cost a nickel. Don't feel bad if you instinctively thought, as I did, that the bat cost a buck. Half of the applicants to M.I.T. and Harvard reflexively answered the same way.
