Village Taco

I am at the halfway point of my culinary wanderings on my quest to eat at every mexican restaurant in Fallbrook this week. I had this horrible worry driving through town this afternoon that I was going to discover another restaurant that I would be forced to try. Made the decision that Bonsall is not Fallbrook, that place near Ringers being pretty terrible and not geographically viable. Ditto Severiano's, don't think it's Mexican, is it? Not really sure... If I am wrong I will give it a shake.

Today I stopped off for a late breakfast at Village Taco, the sit outside place on South Mission near the Korean liquor store. This place sort of popped into my peripheral vision about six months ago but I had never stopped there. I have friends that swear by the place, like every other mexican eatery in town. But these are people I trust like Renée and her son so I went in with an open mind.

They have a pretty extensive menu, sopes, huaraches, some other food I don't really recognize. I ordered a plate of the steak, potato, cheese and egg mini tacos. I got a squeeze bottle of their brownish salsa and went to work. I sat under the visqueen covered patio and looked for the driest chair. The verdict? Quite unremarkable, bordering on tasteless. Perhaps I had hit them on a bad day?

I had some business on the coast today, took a quick walk down at Swamis to the beach and saw a few pals. Stopped at Tip Top and picked up half a duck and some elk. I am making vietnamese duck soup for New Years and need to make it once this week and get the hang of it before I spring it on friends.

I decided to give Village Taco another shot when I got back to town, trying to maintain my journalistic integrity and all. I drove up this afternoon, and ordered a quickie, a carnitas mini taco that wouldn't kill my appetite and hopefully wouldn't kill me. I would like to say that it was awesome but it too was kind of funky and the radish looked a little dirty and I wondered for a second if I was taking my life in my hands by even eating the thing. Caution gave way to gluttony and I downed it. It has been two hours and I am happy to report that I am still alive so I guess we can give the place a thumbs up.

I think I need to come back to this place one day after I have been drinking mass quantities of corona. I am too rigid and stiff, need to throw a little caution to the wind and go for it. Today I just wasn't getting it.
