Kitty, kitty

Leslie saw the tawny bobcat yesterday, just as I had described but she said it was sort of like a teddy bear. It was  bit east of where I had seen it. I hope that it can stay away from stupid humans and survive. Animals that get too close to our species have a way of disappearing.

A story in the Los Angeles Times and elsewhere about the first sighting of a jaguar in the United States in the last two years. I have seen mountain lions, cheetahs, lions and leopards in the wild. Do you have any conception of how big a magnificent jaguar is? Twice as big as a puma. Something that deserves to survive on this planet, in the wild.

What I find horribly curious and offensive is that the guide who spotted the jaguar (no pun intended) was out hunting mountain lion with his ten year old daughter. What kind of person gets their kicks hunting cats? Does this removal of such a noble predator wake up his atavistic urges and make him feel like Tarzan, King of Beasts? You can't eat them...I just don't get it and I will never get it.
