Jennifer Aniston has apparently nosed out Angelina Jolie for sexiest woman ever in a recent poll. I have but one comment. Who knew?  Just shows how old I have gotten. Never having a television to watch Friends, she was never in my sexy woman conversation, not in the top one hundred. Neither of them, Jolie always sort of creeping me out. I could walk down to Swamis in Encinitas and find fifty women on the path any afternoon just as pretty if not prettier. It was obviously the familiar, girl next door, MaryAnn over Ginger pick.

It does show you how each generation picks its own icons. The last truly beautiful actress to me is Kim Basinger. In my youth there were two iconic beauties, Sophia Loren, my favorite and Elizabeth Taylor. Rounding out the field were Raquel Welch and the vixen, Ann Margaret. Slightly before my time the two leading beauties were Hepburn and Grace Kelly, both very classy. Same school as Ingrid Bergman, another nordic swan.

The fifties also had Marilyn and Mansfield, both stunning. Before that was Crawford, not on a par with these others. Leslie mentions Rita Hayworth. Grable. Lamour. The twenties aesthetic of woman was certainly different than the later standards. I wonder how Bathsheba would fare in the current survey? Or Helen of Troy, the face that launched ships? Can you excuse me for thinking that the current voters might be a bit shortsighted? Aniston, you are wholesome, perky, cute, but you are no Sophia.

Of course all of you women are beautiful, every one of you.
