Arizona again

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot and gravely wounded today. She was shot point blank in the head by a man named Jared Laughner. The shooter was young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down.

Laughner apparently shot Giffords and 17 others at a public event at a Safeway grocery store in Tucscon. He reportedly shot the congresswoman "point blank" in the head and may have come from inside the store. After shooting Giffords, he allegedly fired 20-30 rounds and hit "a number of people," including a child. He attempted to flee after running out of ammunition and was tackled by one of Giffords' staffers. Early reports are that an aide and a Federal Judge John Roll were also killed in the shooting as well as four more people including a 9 year old child.

Giffords had been on Sarah Palin's "target list." Once again we see that words have meaning. I talked to a conservative friend about the incident this morning and he cautioned me that the shooter was a nut and should not be called a tea-partier. We don't really no his make up yet. But one of his favorite books was Mein Kampf according to his myspace page. Go figure. You go to bed with dogs, you unfortunately wake up with fleas.  Stoke the fires of racism and violence and we all face the consequences. The conservative fringe needs to do a little soul searching. Of course they will all loudly decry the shootings. But will they partake of any serious self inspection as to the role their actions and rhetoric may have contributed to the angry climate?

Such a terrible tragedy. One target down, Sarah.

I read today that Arizona has now passed a law outlying Hispanic Studies in its schools.

From the NYT:

“It’s propagandizing and brainwashing that’s going on there,” Tom Horne, Arizona’s newly elected attorney general, said this week as he officially declared the program in violation of a state law that went into effect on Jan. 1.

Black and Asian studies have not been touched. Horne wrote the law aimed at challenging Tucson’s ethnic-studies program. The measure was passed last spring, and Gov. Jan Brewer signed it into law in May amid fierce protests.

"The Arizona law warns school districts that they stand to lose 10 percent of their state education funds if their ethnic-studies programs are found not to comply with new state standards. Programs that promote the overthrow of the United States government are explicitly banned, and that includes the suggestion that portions of the Southwest that were once part of Mexico should be returned to that country. Also prohibited is any promotion of resentment toward a race. Programs that are primarily for one race or that advocate ethnic solidarity instead of individuality are also outlawed. "

Horne said the district’s other ethnic-studies programs, unlike the Mexican-American program, had not received complaints and could continue.

After I read this story this morning and now with the shooting episode I think back to last week when the Pakistani lawmaker, Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was shot down by his own bodyguard. He had brooked the religious establishment in fighting their ridiculous anti blasphemy laws. His assassin's supporters threw rose petals as his armoured vehicle passed by with him in custody. I wonder if Laughner will get similar treatment in Arizona?

Latest reports are that Rep. Giffords is still alive and that the Dr.'s are hopeful of her recovery.

Such a senseless loss. Yes, words do have consequences. Maybe people will be more careful in words they use to describe their political thoughts.

Don't blame Brewer or Palin, they aren't responsible; blame the nut who pulled the trigger.

Neither Brewer nor Palin are directly responsible, however, some of their expressed views may be taken quite literally by the kind of nuts that might pull a trigger. Putting a Congress member or anyone else in "your sights" is just not appropriate in this day and age.

This is a direct quote from the Sheriff if Pima County. That is the County in which the shooting took place:

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," said the sheriff. "And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

When asked by a reporter if Giffords being shot could have been motivated by "prejudice and bigotry," Dupnik responded, "All I can tell you is that there's reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think that people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol."

Mr. Anonymous, words do have consequences.

Now Palin has more than moose blood on her hands. Sarah is toast. Hope she sees that dead little girl in all her nightmares.

No, the shooter is not the only one to blame. Charlie Manson was found guilty of inciting others to murder, though he did no actual killing. Just like Palin, et al.

The people of Arizona are as appalled by this as we all are; they won't be throwing any rose petals on Loughner.

What's "right wing" about this lunatic? What's his connection to Sarah Palin? Seriously, any evidence? And no, Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann don't count.

I also note that you neglected to show the crosshairs placed on Rep. Gifford's district by the Daily Kos.

Over on my blog, oh Great Blue Heron, you have taken offense at my snide comments about dope smokers, defending them as some of the smartest people you know. Well, there is evidence--real evidence, not some meathead's opinion--that this guy was a major pothead. It makes more sense to blame his senseless slaughter on Mary Jane than on Sarah Louise.

Not much more sense, but more.

Heard he drank milk too, BTL. Maybe we need to start looking at the milk drinkers.

Robert, Perhaps the Caviar Cabernet and Cannabis have clouded your vision. Everyone on the left quickly blamed Sara Palin and the right wing radical tea party for the AZ. shooting. Well its all over the news and the reality is that he is on your team. A pot head atheist anarchist wonder if he drinks Chateau Mouton Rothschild's and also hates Sara Palin?
Your friend. Lance

Gee, so it was just an accident he shot a Democrat? You stupid rightie freaks, get lost.

Dear Mr. Heron

Your rush to judgment over who was to blame in setting this guy off was close to light-speed on this one...

Even before you had your facts straight, the first Blue Heron "Arizona again" post informed readers that Giffords had been shot and "KILLED" and that Palin was more or less responsible for targeting him.

As it turned out (and as you quickly corrected) She had been shot and "gravely wounded".

"JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM"

I think that everyone would be better served if the accusations were cooled until we learn a little more about the shooter.

Until we have ALL THE FACTS, pointing fingers at who or what set this guy into motion is just more of the same toxic political hatred that is (as you wrote) contributing "to the angry climate" in America.

Personally, I think we're all full of shit... The dope smoking liberals, the Bible thumping conservatives and all of us assholes in between.

You are correct, WD, I did publish the news reports I received that she had been killed. Appreciate you paying attention and I apologize for my error.

windowdancer said...

Your error wasn't the point.

The speed at which "we all" rush to judgment was.

I don't acknowledge a rush to judgement on my part, nor a moral equivalence regarding the behavior of either party. I acknowledge a violence filled rhetorical climate by a certain side that creates an environment for insanity to occur.

Lance, if you were paying attention you would see that we are not drinking a lot of cabs right now, it is mostly pinots and old growth zins...

i love zinfandel, old growth or otherwise; would that it were cheaper, though; then peace would guide the planets and love would steer the stars.
