The scale of the tragedy in Haiti is beyond our comprehension. If the reported casualty figures are correct, it is one of the most tragic natural occurrences in memory. Homeless children are wandering aimlessly and bodies are piling up in the streets. Doctors without Borders has lost three of its hospitals and can not account for its own staff.
So leave it to Pat Robertson to lend us his unique perspective on the matter. The haitians had it coming because somebody made a pact with the nasty ol' devil:
ROBERTSON: Something happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. Napoleon the Third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you get us free from the prince.” True story. And so the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.” They kicked the French out, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free.
But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle, on the one side is Haiti, on the other side is the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island.
They need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come.
I'm sorry, Napoleon the Third? Which Napoleon was that, Nap Laojie? Napoleon Murphy Brock? Obviously the good reverend is not a history student. This isn't the first time that the esteemed preacher has blamed some calamity or unfortunate event on Satan. He said much the same after Katrina. God created the hurricane because of abortion. Ariel Sharon was cut down with a stroke because he divided god's land:
ROBERTSON: I have said last year that Israel was entering into the most dangerous period of its entire existence as a nation. That is intensifying this year with the loss of Sharon. Sharon was personally a very likeable person. I am sad to see him in this condition. But I think we need to look at the Bible and the Book of Joel. The prophet Joel makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who, quote, "divide my land." God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible, he says, "This is my land." And for any prime minister of Israel who decides he going carve it up and give it away, God says, "No. This is mine." And the same thing -- I had a wonderful meeting with Yitzhak Rabin in 1974. He was tragically assassinated, and it was terrible thing that happened, but nevertheless, he was dead. And now Ariel Sharon, who was again a very likeable person, a delightful person to be with. I prayed with him personally. But here he is at the point of death. He was dividing God's land, and I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the EU, the United Nations or United States of America. God said, "This land belongs to me, you better leave it alone."
And we know the real culprit for 9/11 - the ACLU of course!
JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters - the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats--what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact--if, in fact--God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.
JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU got to take a lot of blame for this.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes.
JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way--all of them who have tried to secularize America--I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system.
JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU, and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang "God Bless America" and said "let the ACLU be hanged"? In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time--calling upon God.
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen
I know that this man's views are not reflective of all christians. But he sure speaks for a whole mess of them. He sounds a lot like Pastor Fred Phelps or even Rush Limbaugh, who suggested today that our president would use the catastrophe to curry favor with the "light skinned and black skinned community in this country."
Fundamentalists like to talk about moral relativism and its pervasive harm to this country and for once, I agree. Either you reject the hateful, superstitious bile of Robertson, Limbaugh and their ilk or you don't. There is no middle ground.

What I can't believe is that he said "true story" like he actually was their when they brokered this alleged deal with the devil. Wait! That might explain it...now I can only hear Dana Carvey's Church Lady character in my head saying "Is he Satan"
Christians are at the forefront of relief efforts worldwide; too bad you chose to focus on the Falwell/Robertson lunatic fringe; let's come together and do all we can to help Haiti, that should be our focus, not scoring points against organized religion.
Sorry, the evil made me do it...
er sorry - make that the devil.
Tell grumpy that there should be a world wide effort to end the ridiculous reign of the ultra right conservative lies that destroy God's intentions.
Tell grumpy that hate mongers like rush limbaugh use the same bullshit rhetoric from the Falwell's and Robertson's as actual Biblical truth to turn the conservatives against any liberal act of compassion.
Tell grumpy that these people are Charlatans-wolves in lambs clothing and will never allow the true believers of Jesus alone. They are in bed with corporate devils.
You tell him...
no you tell em....
I guess I did?
