I just assumed this was a Gordon Lightfoot song, it kind of sounds like one; but no, it was written by another Canadian, Gene MacLellan, who had another hit a year later (1971) with "Put Your Hand in the Hand", done by Ocean; Elvis did a real nice version of "Snowbird" also.
