Rob's new toy...

I went to the Apple store last tuesday to see the new Macbook. A smarmy twenty something with a ring in his eyebrow finally resigned himself to answering a question for me but wouldn't bring out the new machines because he didn't have "the visuals" up yet. After catching the guy in an outright lie, I found a nice kid there who was much more responsive.

After months of speculation about the new 900 dollar Mac, people were really deflated to find out that it was all hooey. I wanted to see the actually more expensive bottom end machine for myself. Needed something for road blogging. Yes, Mac lowered the price a hundred bucks but they slowed down the processor to a 2.0 ghz and reduced the drive to 160 from 250. Bait and switch.

I started looking at the virtues of buying the second Macbook. The new one with the new shiny case, no firewire and the too glossy screen that people are bitching about versus buying a clearance or refurbished Macbookpro that was current 10 days ago. Both employees I talked to said that they would go with the Pro for $1489.00 over the Book because of more processing power. I ended up getting a refurb 2.5 ghz MCP that looks absolutely stunning, pristine and brand new and saving a grand from the new model. Contains the NVidia 8600 chip which has had video problems in the past but hopefully are now resolved. Added CS4 with Illustrator for a couple hundred bucks. Don't have the 39% larger touchpad but will get over it with time and therapy.

Anyhow the upshot is that I am skyping now so I will try to stay dressed at the terminal. Interested parties, email me for contact info.

Rob
