I drove by there yesterday. Post and Steiner. Went to 710 Ashbury, had lunch at The Great Highway, now just a restaurant...no Amusement Park, no concerts...but a beach! Went by Winterland, now just an ugly condo complex. It is so bad that it clashes with the old surroundings. Beautiful day to drive through the city...this is Bill checking in
Winterland was the best communal party I ever attended. Of course, you were there! 3000 of our closest friends, with a huge number on a first name basis. Shore do miss it...
This is from my friend S. , now a great photographer in New York who was a prominent road manager and roadie at all of the Fillmores and at Woodstock.
As for Dark Star.... In 70, the power went out in the Fillmore West during Dark Star....at the really quiet bit. I mean ALL the power. So, without missing a beat, all the ushers turned on their flashlights and aimed them at Garcia and he just continued to play his guitar unamplified and it was so quiet, you would hear him...the rest of the band stood silently. Next time they came to the Fillmore, the lighting guy equipped all the ushers with flashlights with gelled lenses and in the same spot in Dark Star, they did the same thing, but this time as an effect.
